OCR: AM/FM SOUND EFFECTS CD REVIEW : "ESSENTIAL SCIENCE FICTION SOUND EFFECTS, VOL. 2" BBCCD 855 TRACKS: 66 TOTAL TIME: 43:46 AM/FM Does anyone want to buy a hardly used Sound Effects CD? Ok, I admit it, I bought this CD without even listening to so much as a second of it first I just looked at the cover, looked at the list of sound effects featured, looked at the price, and decided to buy it. Hmmmm... Bad move. Sure, for someone composing and recording music, soundtracks, background atmospheres, etc., just like I do, this CD contains a great list of all those nice sounds that are really good to have available - the only problem is that everything sounds about 15-20 years old! And after taking a close look at the cover, no wonder it sounds that old it IS!! Some of the effects on this CD are "Space Ship take-off", "Space battle", "Lazer Guns", "Faeries in the forest" "Magic Caves", "Evil Rising Up", "Flying Carpet", "Goblins in the dark", "Deep Water Adventures", etc. etc. you get the picture. A really great collection of effects, all the sounds that are great for adding atmosphere to the kind of music that so many of us are into. So looking at the cover, and overlooking the effects available, this is truly a great CD. The lengths of the tracks are from 4 seconds up to about a minute and a half. The problem is the recording, really. There's a kind of scraping sound on them, they lack depth and warmth - in short, they just sound really *old*. The first thing that popped into my mind when I heard the CD was: "Doctor Who?". Remember that old, REALLY bad Science Fiction series from one of the British TV companies - well, this CD literally smells* Doctor Who. I think probably every single track on the CD comes from this TV series. In my opinion, the CD should have been titled "Doctor Who sound effects". I wouldn't have bought it then! I doubt if I'll ever use any of these effects in any of my music. I'd rather spend some time making my own atmospheres and sound effects, even though it takes a lot of boring synth-programming (which I hate). DO have much better dynamics, and the sound effects you have much more depth than the ones on this CD. Today's synths really can make on them just Oh well, it was only about ú15. I'll live.
